The Behavioral Health Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the residential treatment environment while providing leadership and support to direct-care staff. This role serves as a key point of contact on the floor, ensuring patients receive safe, compassionate, structured, and trauma-informed care.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader who remains calm under pressure, understands behavioral health and addiction treatment environments, and can balance patient needs, staff supervision, documentation requirements, safety protocols, and daily program operations.

Team Leadership & Staff Supervision
  • Supervise, support, and mentor Behavioral Health Technicians, Recovery Advocates, and other direct-care team members.
  • Coordinate shift assignments, staff coverage, breaks, and daily responsibilities.
  • Provide real-time coaching and guidance to staff regarding patient interactions, boundaries, documentation, and facility procedures.
  • Help maintain accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and consistent standards across the shift.
  • Communicate staffing concerns, performance issues, and operational needs to appropriate leadership.
Crisis Management & Patient Safety
  • Serve as a primary on-floor responder during psychiatric crises, behavioral escalations, medical concerns, or other emergencies.
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation and approved crisis intervention techniques to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Recognize changes in patient behavior, mood, presentation, or functioning that may require additional clinical or medical intervention.
  • Coordinate with clinical, nursing, medical, and leadership teams when higher-level intervention is necessary.
  • Ensure emergency procedures and incident response protocols are followed appropriately.
Program & Shift Operations
  • Oversee daily residential routines and ensure the program remains organized and on schedule.
  • Coordinate patient attendance for groups, appointments, meals, recreational activities, and other scheduled programming.
  • Support and monitor medication-pass processes within the employee's authorized scope and facility policy.
  • Conduct or oversee patient headcounts, room checks, safety rounds, and environmental inspections.
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, patient belongings, transportation coordination, and other residential operations as needed.
  • Ensure appropriate shift-to-shift communication and continuity of care.
Compliance, Safety & Quality Assurance
  • Ensure direct-care staff follow facility policies, licensing requirements, health and safety regulations, confidentiality requirements, and established patient-care protocols.
  • Maintain awareness of environmental and patient safety risks throughout the facility.
  • Ensure required safety checks, headcounts, contraband procedures, and environmental rounds are completed and documented.
  • Escalate safety, compliance, staffing, or patient-care concerns to leadership promptly.
  • Support a culture of accountability, patient dignity, professional boundaries, and continuous improvement.
Documentation & EHR Oversight
  • Review shift documentation for accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and compliance.
  • Audit shift logs, patient observations, incident reports, progress notes, safety documentation, and other required records.
  • Ensure staff documentation accurately reflects patient presentation, interventions, significant events, and changes in condition.
  • Coach staff on appropriate documentation practices and use of the facility's electronic health record system.
  • Ensure significant incidents and clinical concerns are communicated to appropriate members of the treatment team.
Preferred
  • Previous supervisory, lead technician, or shift-lead experience within a residential behavioral health setting.
  • Certified Behavioral Health Technician (CBHT) credential.
  • Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) or similar recovery credential.
  • CPI, Handle With Care, MAB, or comparable crisis-prevention and de-escalation training.
  • Experience working with substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, severe mental illness, or high-acuity behavioral health populations.
Compensation: $50,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
